Treatment of drug abuse, young people and alcohol, drugs and alcohol in prisons, drugs and alcohol and ethnicity. Torsten Kolind’s research has focused on many different subjects during his 12-year employment at the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research. In recognition of his work in the field, he has now been appointed professor.

“My strength is that I have a broad research scope within the field of alcohol and drugs. The field is not a classically established discipline, and there is no history of theory to build on. We have to develop this ourselves. I hope that as a professor, I can help to strengthen this work,” says Torsten Kolind.

He graduated from the Master’s degree programme in anthropology at Aarhus University in 1997. In 2004, he completed a PhD in the same department, and from 2003, he was employed at the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research initially as an assistant professor and from 2008 as an associate professor. As of 1 September 2015, Torsten Kolind can now add the title of professor to his CV. The professorship is a fixed-term 5-year position.

Research and communication

Torsten Kolind has just finished a major Nordic research project which focused on the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse in prisons. A more recent field of research is that of drugs and alcohol and ethnicity where he focuses on two groups in particular: poorly integrated youths who often adopt drugs and alcohol into their sub-culture, and well-integrated youths who choose not to drink alcohol at all.

Torsten Kolind presents his research in international journals, as a speaker at international conferences, and as an active participant in the public debate. He is currently the editor of the book ”Handbook of Drug and Alcohol Studies. Social Science Perspectives” together with colleagues from the US and the UK. The book is published in 2016.  Since 2013, he has also been the editor-in-chief of the international journal: ”Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy”.

Better treatment

Torsten Kolind also contributes towards ensuring that the research results benefits practitioners. At the moment, he does so by being a member of the steering committee of the project “Over the Wall” (Over muren). The project focuses on how to improve the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse in Danish prisons.
